BICYCLE SAFETY AWARENESS DAY
CHICOPEE, MA – On Saturday, August 24, 2019 the Knights of Columbus Insurance - Wisniewski Agency, located at 1847 Memorial Drive, Chicopee MA, near Saint Anne’s Church is hosting a bicycle safety awareness day in conjunction with the Chicopee Police and Fire Departments. The event will run from 10am till 1pm.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), there were 783 deaths due to traffic accidents in the United States in 2017, with over 80% of them occurring during daylight hours. There has already been one fatality in Chicopee in 2019. In order to increase bicycle safety in the local community, it is important for cyclists and drivers alike to be refreshed on the basic tenants of bicycle safety at least once per year.
Summer season is bike season. Chicopee Information Police Officer, Mike Wilk recently told Western Mass News that crashes between cars and bikes are on the rise. "With all the gadgets inside vehicles, your navigation, your satellite radio, your cells phones, your texting, there absolutely has been an uptick in crashes and close calls," Officer Wilk explained.
The Chicopee Fire Department will also be in attendance to hand out free bicycle helmets to children.
The Knights of Columbus was founded in 1882 by priest Father Michael McGivney in order to help protect Catholic families. Today his vision lives on with over 2 Million brother knights nationwide, who gave over 76 million hours of community service in 2018 and over $185 million in donations.
